7 Ways to Secure Your VoIP Network

Unlike the landline, the VoIP Service contains a variety of pieces of code. Where there is code, there are hackers trying to hack into it in order to steal personal information, and viruses that ruin the integrity of the data passed through the line. As great as VoIP services are, your VoIP Network runs the risk of the same problems that can occur within all types of code, which is why adding various forms of security to your VoIP Network is a good way to make sure your call quality stays intact and your data is safe.

1. Add Multiple Encryption Layers

If you want to ensure that your VoIP Network remains unhacked, it is best to have multiple layers of encryption in order to make it harder for others to gain access to your data. Secure all packets in and out, and add SRTP and TLS protocols.

2. Firewall Everything

All of your equipment should have firewalls, separate even from your VoIP Network in order to create extra security.

3. Use a Separate Network for Your Internet

When applicable, you can separate your VoIP Network from your general network so that it cannot be affected by incoming data sent from the Internet.

4. Keep Your Computer Updated

When a new security patch comes out for your operating system, make sure that you install it immediately. If your operating system is not secure, then your VoIP Network is also at risk.

5. Use a VPN

Your calls are private. With a virtual private network (VPN), you can make sure that your calls cannot be listened to by keeping the voice and data separate from each other.

6. Keep Other Application Use to a Minimum

The more programs you have running, the more opportunities a hacker has to get at your information. Only your VoIP Network should be running at any given time, in order to protect yourself from hackers masking their activities.

7. Keep Your VoIP Data on a Single Network

Restricting your data to a VLAN (virtual local area network) will allow you to separate your own calls from other people that may have access to your network. As a result, there is no way that a hacker can access your computer, leaving your data far safer.

These tips can help you keep your information secure, keep eavesdroppers away, and reduce the number of viruses that can harm your computer and your service.
