3 Ways to Connect a VoIP System
As more and more individuals and organizations switch to a VoIP System in order to save on costs, it becomes important to choose your connection method before making the transition. How you choose to connect to your VoIP System helps decide which hardware you need to purchase and how you plan on using the system to run your business or household.
The Methods of Connection
1) The Standard Telephone
Some people choose to connect to their VoIP System using their standard telephone. Most common in households but still viewable in some smaller offices, connecting using a standard telephone makes the service appear to be a standard landline, just as if you had never made the switch. Using a simple adaptor designed to make the transition smoothly, this method is best for homes and smaller offices, and is often provided by the telephone companies themselves.
2) Soft Phones
Soft phones are another method of connecting your VoIP System. Soft phones are not actually hardware – it is connecting your phone to a PC, so that all calls run directly through the computer. Hardware is often still needed in the form of headsets, microphones, and soundcards, but in general the soft phone is like doing away with traditional telephones and simply using software and other standard computer hardware to easily make calls. Soft phones are also most common in households, but when used correctly could be beneficial for some offices.
3) Dedicated Phones
Much like standard telephones, dedicated VoIP Phones resemble the standard landline phones, except that they have their own unique port and are made specifically for your VoIP System. These dedicated phones do not need to be run through a computer, because they are able to connect directly to your network on their own. This is a great choice for those that do not want the hassle of having their computer directly hooked up to their phone, and though some phones are VoIP System specific, they are often good choices for both the home and the workplace.
Choosing The Connection for You
Whichever connection you choose should be largely based on the features that you need the phone to have. Dedicated VoIP phones have different sets of features and uses than soft phones and standard telephones, etc. You should make the choice of which phone to use on the features you expect to want and need with your VoIP System.
A soft phone would not make sense if you wanted to be able to walk around your home, but may be perfect if you expect to conference through your computer. Each of these has its own benefits and weaknesses that you should take into consideration before you choose your connection method.
