Should You Contract a Web Site Designer Or Use a Template?

When a business decides it needs to create a website, it has two options:

  1. It can outsource to a Web Site Designer in order to get a customized website built for its needs.
  2. It can purchase a template that provides the business with a generalized website at a low cost.

Each of these has its own benefits, but both also come with their own risks. Making the right decision the first time is important for ensuring that you properly brand your business and get your website as well as your online presence off to a good start.

When To Use a Web Site Designer

Web Site Designers come at a cost, but the benefits are fairly substantial. When you choose a specific designer – one that has the credentials and experience that you are looking for, and is willing to stand by their work – you can get a website that easily meets all your needs. Chances are it will be more interactive, have features that your visitors will appreciate, and can have a website that is better branded in order to help your website become more memorable.

Your website will also have an individual you can contact to back it up if it has performance issues, and it will likely be more suitable for search engines.

However, these benefits also come with risks. A website build from scratch is more likely to experience bugs that reflect poorly on your business. It is also difficult to find a Web Site Designer that truly has the experience and skills necessary to build you a quality website. And when you do find such a person, chances are their costs are high.

A good Web Site Designer is a powerful tool, especially when you have the resources to splurge on a high quality, effective website.  But if you do not have those resources and do not have time to research before hand – or you do not plan on having a heavy online presence, then a Web Site Designer may not be necessary.

What to Use a Web Site Template

Web site templates are far less expensive than a Web Site Designer, but that low price comes with its own cost. You lose originality in the design, your website is less likely to reach its target audience in a way that benefits your business, and if you need anything customized/changed/edited in the future, chances are you will have to contact a designer anyway.

When you are looking for something quick, simple, and low cost, a template will work just fine. But when you are committing to your online presence, and want to make sure you have an effective website that generates business for you, a designer is much more effective; especially where SEO Web Design features are incorporated.
